VERONICA MILO JUNE 23, 1925 - MAY 30, 2011 Age 85, died peacefully at her home, Sierra Vista Retirement community, in Santa Fe, NM. She is survived by three children, Michael, Liz ad Julia and six grandchildren. Born in Berkeley, CA, the only child of Basil and Julia Milo, immigrants from Russia, she graduated from Alameda High School at age 15 and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laud from the University of California, Berkeley in mathematics and philosophy and became a member of the Phi Beta Kappa. She worked as a draftsperson helping design aircraft during WW II. In 1956 she met and married Dr. Neil Karp and lived in Los Angeles until 1961 when their house burned in the devastating Bel Air fire. The family then moved to Santa Barbara, where the children were raised. There she worked at TEMPO, General Electric's Center for Advanced Studies, helping to develop the first computers. She also taught English as a second language to Vietnamese and Laotian families. She was very active in the League of Women Voters and the Democratic Party, In the 1980's, Veronica moved to Lake Tahoe for a few years, where she opened a bed and breakfast with a close friend. She returned to Santa Barbara where she lived until moving to Santa Fe for the last decades of her life. Veronica was a gifted artist, world traveler, incredible cook, and a lover of domestic and wild animals, sea and mountains. Our childhood home and open doors for unique and much loved pets including a possum, a raccoon, monkeys, peacocks, various large and small reptiles as well as cats, dogs, birds, rodents and a huge number of teenagers. Veronica was an incredibly loving passionate person, a great mom and was always the life of the party. We will miss our Mother deeply. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wildlife Center in Espanola, 505-753-9505. A celebration of Veronica's life will be held at Sierra Vista Retirement community and a memorial will be held in Santa Barbara, California. For details, contact Liz Karp at: physfix@hotmail.com
