1748Frontier farmer and field commandant Tjaart van der Walt, who played an important role in the third frontier war against the combined forces of the Xhosa and Khoi-Khoi, was born in the Roggeveld, district of Sutherland, Cape Colony. On 8 August 1802 van der Walt was killed in a skirmish in the Kouga Mountains, between the Baviaanskloof and Kouga Rivers. His death was a heavy loss because all men, from the humblest to Maj. Gen. F. Dundas, acting governor of the Cape, had confidence in his tact and ability, as well as in his courage, sense of duty and steadfast character. He was buried in the Kouga Mountains
