From the Pension Record of the National Archives it is shown that he served under Captain Dixon in 1776 or 1777. They marched to the lead mines in western Virginia to guard them from the English and Indians. During the Revolutionary War, he was a member of the Amherst Company of the Virginia Militia, serving under Captain William Lovin, and fought under General Washington in the battle of Yorktown in 1781 at Williamsburg, Virginia. After the battle, he remained for an additional tour of duty guarding the English prisoners following their surrender.
