Hieronymus II von Birckholtz was the son of Hieronymus I von Birckholtz (1535-1590) and his wife Anna von Brixen. The father was Chancellor of the Principality of the Land County of Brandenburg-Küstrin in the German-Roman Empire, which existed between 1535 and 1571 and where the capital was Küstrin, now Kostrzyn nad Odrą in Poland. The father was also a secret adviser from Cottbus in Saxony. Within the German-Roman Empire, the secret council (German: «geheimerat») was a secret council, later the title became an official title in the German monarchies. After 1356, the principality was also called the Electorate of Brandenburg, today it is a historic landscape. The former state of the Land County of Brandenburg-Küstrin is today part of northeastern Germany and western Poland.
