Jack, age 6, was living on Denison & Bells Road in Grayson County, Texas with his father and mother and brothers Houston, and Lawrence.

Jack was living in Charlotte, NC with his father, his step-mother, brothers Houston, Lawrence and Norman and half brothers, Everette, Harvey (H. G.) and Martin. Houston and Jack were working as doffers in a cotton mill.

Jack drowned in a naval disaster in 1923 while serving on the destroyer USS Young. An account of the episode from the Department of the Navy reads as follows:Honda Point Disaster, 8 September 1923The Navy\'s greatest navigational tragedy took place in September, 1923 at an isolated California headland locally known as Honda Point. Officaially called Point Perdernales, Honda is a few miles from the northern entrance of the heavily-traveled Santa Barbara Channel. completely exposed to wind and wave, and often obscured by fog, this rocky shore has claimed many vessels, but never more at one stroke that at about 9 PM on the dark evening of 8 September 1923, when seven nearly new U. S. Navy destroyers and twenty-three lives were lost there.

Jack\'s father, Harvey G. Kirby, who died in 1941, is buried next to his son. The photo shows Jack\'s brothers , Lawrence, Norman, Everette, HG, and Martin at his grave. Brother Houston may have been away in the Navy when this photo was taken.
